My Top Tips for Decluttering

Hello! Recently I went through all my makeup and had a MASSIVE declutter. I mean seriously, decreased my collection. It felt really good though as I knew I wasn’t using a lot of it and some of it was really old as well so needed to go. I thought I’d write a blogpost about what was going through my mind when I was deciding what to keep and what to throw away. I now have a huge bag of makeup that I’m going to let friends and family go through.

When was the last time you used it?

This was the biggest and first question I asked myself, as this one was the deal breaker for a lot of my makeup products. I have been wearing a lot less makeup in general recently so this really highlighted which products are my go to and which ones just never get touched. If I’ve not used a product for more than 6 months- get rid! Your cream based products & mascara will only last that long anyway. The picture above is of the Sleek Blush in pomegranate. I used to love their blushes and before I was really into makeup, I bought this shade because I loved the colour but looking back it’s way too dark for my skin tone.

Is it still any good quality wise?

This helped me separate things that perhaps I do use quite a lot, however I may have had it for so long that it’s probably not good for my skin anymore. My example would be the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer, this is my go to concealer, however as I’ve been wearing less makeup, I’ve had it soooooo long. So decided to chuck it and buy a new one. You can still love and use a product a lot but it might be doing you any good.

This is the first lipstick I EVER bought, I must have been about 16…? So this is 6 years old?! I never use it anymore and I think I was only keeping it for sentimental reasons but it’s time to get rid. I have so many lipsticks that are the same shade and probably better quality.

Does it spark joy?

To quote Marie Kondo….Does it spark joy? This has really changed the way I look at my belongings ever since I read her book ‘The Life Changing Magic of Tidying’. If a belonging doesn’t make you feel happy when you use it, then you should get rid of it. So many of makeup products tend to have a memory behind it and make me reminisce about a certain time, so I think it’s nice to keep (as long as it’s not everything!). However on the other hand, sooo many of my products I couldn’t even tell you where I got it or why I even bought it in the first place.

I picked this up when I was in Canada, so 1) it’s definitely past it’s best, 2) I wasn’t a fan of to when I bought it but I’ve kept it this whole time thinking I’ll make use of it – save time and donate it to someone that will enjoy using it!
